Gadgets & Gizmos

This is the place to blog about new and/or interesting hardware, or even not-so-interesting stuff, as in, "Stay at least a hundred yards away from this card by XYZ!"

The more stuff we accumulate here, the better prepared our members will be when shopping for that next thigamjig!

PalmOne Treo 600 on Sprint

by Lewis on 04/28/04
Gadgets & GizmosSee my notes in OS-Specific: Palm (coming soon) concerning my new (well, two months old, now) Treo 600. I have decidedly mixed feelings about this smartphone, and frankly, I can't wait to get my hands on a Motorola A760 which will run here in the States!!

[ Linux on the WRT54G]

Now this is really an accomplishment (and not only the programming to get a captive portal pushed into the RAM on a 54g, but also getting LinkSys and Broadcom to publish enough of their specs to be able to do it!). Talk about a hotspot in a box!

Anyway, a couple more related links worth reading: http://nocat.net/download/NoCatSplash/ and http://nocat.net/~rob/wrt54g/. (BTW, as an aside for the last link, Rob Flickenger's book, Wireless Hacks, is a must-read, IMO. Catch a good review of it by Glenn Fleishman here.)

This very well-qualified fellow has some great homegrown antenna designs, including tons of pictures & field drawings, and his site has a wonderful supply of links to other similar places. If your signal is dropping off a bit around the edges, or you're simply curious to see what's out there, have a look at this site.

This is about the coolest thing I've seen yet for getting a traditional Palm device Wi-Fi'd.

Anyone have any experience with this card? I'm thinking of getting one for a client, and would like some feedback. Thanks!

Gadgets & Gizmos [Smart ID WiFi Detector (WFS-1)]

In direct competition with the Kensington WiFi Finder, Smart ID Technology PTE, LTD has released their credit card sized sniffer. As the reviews on the Kensington unit have been...er...less than lukewarm, I'd be interested to see if anyone here has tried one of these units.

Wow! If you've ever yearned for the good ol' days of ham radio or Heathkits, this place has quite a selection of Wi-Fi gear to free your spirit, from antennas to access points and accessories.

From the above link, you can get to the rest of Electrovaya's site, which has some pretty interesting things on it. The PowerPads are perhaps the most useful to all of us road warriors... Amazing power in a flat pad that sits under your notebook.
